10 Best Harry Potter Plot Twists
1. Snape’s True Allegiance – The Half-Blood Prince And The Deathly Hallows
Snape’s allegiance was a story arc involving multiple twists, the first of which came in the form of Dumbledore’s death at the end of the penultimate story. Crucially, this twist raised a key question – was Dumbledore’s death preordained or was Snape loyal to Voldemort?
Snape’s memories at the end of The Deathly Hallows confirmed the former to be true, yet few could have predicted why this was the case.
As with other twists, Rowling had skilfully masked the truth earlier on. During one of Harry’s previous exploits inside the pensieve, he had seen Snape describe Lily as a Mudblood, suggesting that he did not care for her.
However, in The Deathly Hallows, it was finally revealed that Snape had loved Lily since childhood, and that this was the foundation of his loyalty to Dumbledore. This in turn also explained why Snape felt such animosity towards Harry and his father, as both of them were a reminder that Lily had loved another.
Despite the fact that some fans correctly guessed that Snape had always been loyal to Dumbledore, it was almost impossible to predict the reason behind such loyalty.
