10 Best Harry Potter Plot Twists
3. Mad-Eye Moody Was Barty Crouch Junior – The Goblet Of Fire
The plot twist at the end of The Goblet of Fire was one of Rowling’s greatest. As well as being beautifully hinted at throughout the narrative, said twist had two shocking elements to it. Specifically, Mad-Eye Moody was not just an imposter in disguise, said imposter was also a Death Eater who was believed to be dead.
During Harry’s fourth year, there were a number of clues to this ending. Yet such clues were wonderfully masked by Rowling. For instance, Moody routinely tried to help Harry during the tournament, indicating that he was looking out for him, when in reality he was trying to give him a head start into the maze, making him more likely to reach the cup first.
There was also a clue during Harry’s ventures with his golden egg. After leaving the prefects’ bathroom, he noticed the name ‘Barty Crouch’ on the Marauder’s Map, believing this to be Barty Crouch Senior when it was in fact his son.
Still, given that Crouch had supposedly died in Azkaban many years ago, such clues were easily passed over. As a result, the unveiling of Moody’s true identity came as a massive shock.
