4. Kong: Skull Island

While 2014's Godzilla and its 2019 sequel may have disappointed a little, they're shared universe cohort Kong: Skull Island was an entirely different beast.

Upon being first announced, many rolled their eyes at the thought of yet another King Kong picture, with it unsure what could possibly be done to make this property interesting once again. But wouldn't you know it, Jordan Vogt-Roberts absolutely knocked it out of the park with his 2017 Skull Island offering.

Taking the action to the Skull Island home of Kong, audiences got to see a land full of larger-than-life creatures and the skeletal remains of so many fallen beasts of centuries past. Not just that, we got to see a Kong character design that harkened back to the character's original appearance from 1933.

Kong: Skull Island wasn't merely a love letter to King Kong movies of old, though, for it also paid homage to, and pulled inspiration from, the aesthetic of films like Apocalypse Now and Platoon - both of which were set in the '70s landscape that Kong: Skull Island itself was based in.

This was a movie that brought a sense of fun and energy back to the Kong character, while likewise the story had its heart in the right place and delivered enough to keep audiences engaged throughout.
