10 Best Horror Movie Franchises

Whilst James Cameron might have remarked that he preferred his Aliens to be 'more on terror, less on horror', the Alien franchise is still a series very much rooted in its horror roots.

Ridley Scott first brought the franchise to life back in 1979, with his distinctive focus on dark creepy atmospheres and a largely unseen foe helping to create one of the most suspenseful and genuinely terrifying films ever released. With arguably the greatest hero in cinema history with Ellen Ripley and iconic features such as the Xenomorph's acid blood, fear of felines or chest bursting tendencies, it was a recipe that proved to be outrageously popular with critics and audiences alike.

The series has definitely moved into the more combat-heavy genre following the debut of Alien, however each and every film has still contained plenty of homages and tropes that keep it firmly in the horror court. After a couple of duds with Aliens 3 and 4, Ridley Scott returned in 2012 and 2017 with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant which, whilst divisive, have certainly helped return the series much more towards the Ridley-esque style.

Horror fan, gamer, all round subpar content creator. Strongly believes that Toad is the real hero of the Mario universe, and that we've probably had enough Batman origin stories.
