Remaking the 2008 Swedish horror film, Let the Right One In, Matt Reeves' Let Me In is an inspired take on the story while making it distinctly his own.

The narrative is preserved almost entirely, with Reeves making a few changes here and there to streamline the narrative, such as trimming back the roles of the adults next door and cutting Owen's father altogether. But where Reeves really leaves his mark is in the style, tone, and visuals of the piece.

Through Reeves' singular vision, moments like Owen being bullied and given a wedgie in the locker room are absolutely horrifying to watch. Filmed in drastic close-ups with little to no musical accompaniment, and the most disturbing of sound effects, these sequences take a played-out trope (protagonist in school getting bullied) and reinvigorates it as a storytelling device.

There are also moments like the finale, in which Abby kills all of the bullies around Owen, all of which is captured in one long take. It's visceral and innovative all at once. And most importantly of all, all of it is done in service of the narrative. Reeves loving crafts a new film around the narrative of the Swedish version, that is distinctly his own and a more red-blooded, American adaptation of the material.
