It's pretty likely that if you're reading a list like this, you're familiar with the work of Lars von Trier. This notorious director has created some of the most disturbing and shocking movies of all time, such as Nymphomaniac, Antichrist, Dancer in the Dark and Melancholia. So, with a resume like that, you might be shocked to learn that this hellish flick is his most controversial.

The movie follows a conversation between the titular Jack and Verge, otherwise known as Virgil, the Roman poet featured in Dante's Divine Comedy. Jack is a malicious serial killer who is obsessed with perfection, and he talks to Verge about the murders he's committed, sparing no detail. Eventually, the two make their way through Hell, which feels entirely suitable for the sick-minded protagonist.

There's an unwavering barbarity to this film that makes it a horrifying watch. You see some truly haunting images, and it's all topped off by von Trier's fantastic cinematography and pacing. Watching Jack murder adults and children alike feels like Hell on Earth, which makes the character's eventual transition into the underworld so fitting.

It's a unique and challenging film, but one that you need to see if you like the darker side of cinema.
