10 Best Horror Movies Set In New York
8. Sisters
Contrary to popular belief, Carrie wasn't Brian De Palma's first jab at horror. In 1972, the esteemed filmmaker directed the lesser-known slasher Sisters, starring Margot Kidder in dual roles.
Centred around Staten Island-based model Danielle (Kidder) as her life is turned upside-down after witnessing a murder, Sisters sees Danielle trying to solve the case herself after police dismiss her story. Although slashers are usually set up as whodunnits, Sisters goes against convention by revealing Danielle's twin sister, Dominique, as the killer straight away. But as more details are uncovered about Danielle and her twisted relationship with her sibling, it becomes clear that nothing is as black-and-white as it seems.
De Palma may not have been a horror auteur at the time, but Sisters proves the Scarface director always had a knack for the genre. The sharp editing, beautiful cinematography, and Bernard Herrmann's haunting score leave every scene drenched in palatable tension, and Kidder's performance as the killer seems hammy at first, but it becomes apparent later how complex and tragic the character is.
Even though some elements are predictable, Sisters is nerve-wracking from beginning to end, since the story goes in stomach-churning directions that nobody is ready for.
