10 Best Horror Movies Set In New York
5. Scream VI
After churning out a slew of sequels, a horror franchise may try to keep things fresh by switching up the scenery. For example, Leprechaun, Jason Voorhees, and Pinhead have all proven that outer space is a surprisingly popular place to relocate their respective franchises to.
So, when it came to Scream VI, Ghostface was moved from Woodsboro to New York City for a change. At first, this shift sounded like a bad idea as the various Ghosfaces have been renowned for haunting their victims on the phone before often slaughtering them in their own home. For this reason, turning Ghostface into a street killer doesn't feel right. (You'd think the franchise would've learned its lesson after the divisive Scream 3 took place in Hollywood.)
However, Scream VI's opening shows the lunatic's shtick still works in the big city. In the first scene, one Ghostface phones his blind date, pretends he's lost, and lures her into a deserted alleyway where he hacks her to pieces.
Since this latest Ghostface spree takes place on Halloween, the villains have no trouble marching through the streets, the subway, or into bodegas in their ghoulish attire as they can easily be mistaken. And even though changing the setting could've backfired, it was a great way to reinvigorate the Scream franchise.
