10 Best Horror Movies Set In Space

4. Planet Of The Vampires

High Life
American International Pictures

An Italian movie from 1965, Planet of the Vampires is about a planet full of... werewolves!

Just kidding, it's zombies.

Just kidding, it's chimeras.

Alright fine, it's vampires.

Directed by the so-called Master of Italian Horror Mario Bava, the film's premise is as simple as its title. Two ships crash land on a deserted planet and must then fight off the possessed corpses of those that did not survive. Simple and effective, what more do you want from a movie?

Considering its age, the film is very gory. Bava pulls few punches in what he shows, really pushing the boundaries for what was acceptable at the time.

Furthermore, the movie is absolutely gorgeous. It is shot beautifully, which adds some real legitimacy to what could be viewed as yet another trashy low-rent horror flick. The scene were the survivors explore a derelict spaceship is particularly well-made and as creepy and foreboding as anything you'll see in cinemas today.

Despite having a name you might expect to find in a bargain bin somewhere, Planet of the Vampires is a fantastic time and is widely regarded as the best science-fiction film ever made in Italy.

Although we're not entirely sure how much competition it had.
