10 Best Horror Movies Set In The Past
3. Bone Tomahawk
In terms of Western-horror mashups, they don't come much bigger or better than the Kurt Russell-led romp Bone Tomahawk. Well, we say romp. This is actually an incredibly disturbed piece about a tribe of cannibals. Maybe we should have used a different word.
Russell plays Sherriff Franklin Hunt, a small-town law enforcer from the 1890s who learns of the existence of a Native American tribe labelled "the Troglodytes".
The clan are avoided by other Native Americans due to their fondness for incest and cannibalism, which is a fair reason to keep away from someone. It's up to the Sheriff and his group to take on the vicious monsters when three local townspeople are abducted.
Westerns are eerie enough anyway. You've got the isolation of a desert setting, the various wild animals that roam the wastelands at night, and the constant beating down of the sun that drains you of your energy.
Chuck in some cannibals, and that's a recipe for a creepy time.
Unfortunately, there are some undertones of racism to this movie, what with them portraying the Native peoples as savages, but as long as you remember that this is a fictionalised account of the Old West, you should be okay.
