10 Best Horror Movies That Aren't Supernatural

2. Misery (1990)

Don't Look Now
Columbia Pictures

A legend in the world of horror whose mind has gifted us the unforgettable likes of The Shining, It, Christine, Carrie, and countless other blood-curdling tales of terror, Stephen King’s work is no stranger to meddling in the supernatural; but not everything he’s written draws on the paranormal for its horror. Look no further than Misery.

After novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) breaks his legs in a car accident, he finds himself in the care of Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a self-declared fan of his work. Unfortunately for Sheldon, this isn’t the rescue he was hoping for.

While at first Annie appears to be a wholesome and genuinely caring person, Sheldon's situation soon worsens when Wilkes is displeased with how the author chooses to end his book. Holding him captive in her home through extreme measures, she forces him to re-write his manuscript to give the titular character the ending Wilkes desires.

Inspired to write the novel after a negative fan reaction to The Eyes of the Dragon, King’s sadistic depiction of fandom still rings eerily true today. Carried by a frightfully unhinged performance by Bates, fan culture has never looked so scary.
