10 Best Horror Movies Told In Real Time

1. Unfriended

Buried Ryan Reynolds
Blumhouse Productions

Yes, it's the shockingly solid MTV horror which takes the top spot.

There may be a cottage industry of YouTube videos which delight in deconstructing the many technical errors featured during Unfriended's brief runtime, but for viewers who can stomach some dodgy technical oversight, this underrated teen horror from 2014 makes for an agreeably mean spirited tale of vengeance on bullies (by other bullies) from beyond the grave.

Not only presented entirely in real time but also taking place entirely on the screen of one laptop, this film's conceit could very easily have overwhelmed its story. However, the filmmakers made the wise choice to avoid anything resembling seriousness or emotional resonance.

Instead, the creators spin the tale into a hilariously downbeat and nasty piece of teen drama wherein the characters are universally hate-worthy and the audience is encouraged to cheer on their inevitable demises.

Yes, the cast are a set of forgettable teens, but Unfriended's secret weapon is that it revels in this fact, making no attempts to humanize its characters when it can instead slowly ratchet up the tension and black humour all the way through to its charmingly cynical jump scare ending.
