10 Best Horror Westerns

7. Happy Hunting

A razor sharp more recent effort, 2016's Happy Hunting is a dark, intense addition to the "neo-Western" meets horror sub genre.

Less explicitly horror-based than some of the films listed here, this intense thriller is closer to the likes of Jeremy Saulnier's Green Room or Jordan Peele's socially conscious horror satires. The film follows the brutal misadventures of an alcoholic war veteran who abandons his work cooking meth for a local gang in order to find his estranged daughter in Mexico.

Of course he takes a little start up money from said meth cooking operation, meaning he needs to hole up in a gated community on the way to the border. A gated community whose affluent residents make a sick sport of hunting humans, that is.

A dark satire of class division in America, this vicious Western horror is also a bleak and ultra-violent piece of cross genre terror as the movie moves between thrilling chase sequences, gory stand-offs, and some outright horror scenes near its cruel, ironic denouement.

A rare triple threat, this one is not to be missed by Western fans, horror heads, satire lovers... Almost anyone, really.

Well, anyone with a strong stomach.
