10 Best Horror Westerns

2. Ravenous

Bone Tomahawk Skull
20th Century Fox

Easily the most underrated film on this list (which is an impressive achievement, given how little known many of these movies are) Face director Antonia Bird’s Ravenous is a truly one of a kind genre fusion.

This darkly funny cannibal horror mixes horror tropes with a classic Western plot in its dark, but oddly hilarious tale of a small outpost’s infiltration by a wendigo.

What’s that? Nothing much, just a Native American mythical creature which is believed to have once been a man and now derives its strength from eating them. Oh, and it can still blend into a group of people, in an ingeniously unsettling twist.

With an ensemble cast including Guy Pearce as its troubled anti hero and a career best Robert Carlyle as the campy villain, this one boasts some stomach upsetting gory horror and unexpectedly stunning vistas as its characters traverse the wilderness in search of sustenance and revenge.

Bloody brutal and thoughtful, this dark rumination on humanity’s self destructive streak is one of the best horror Westerns ever made.
