9. Only Lovers Left Alive

A Jim Jarmusch-helmed vampire movie was never going to be a conventional entry into the genre, but this blood soaked romantic horror takes a serious look at the ennui and malaise of the undead, along with moments of more genre-traditional guts and gore.

Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton star as Adam and Eve, two vampires who have been married for what feels like forever, but now flit across the earth, having done everything they possibly can in the myriad lifetimes they have occupied the planet.

Only Lovers Left Alive captures the sorrow at the core of eternal life, or at any rate eternal existence. The world has long left them behind, and they sustain themselves on a stash of pre-21st century blood out of fear of modern contaminants (stashed by John Hurt, in a glorious turn as the playwright and apparent vampire Christopher Marlowe).

It’s a slow burning and brooding film typical of Jarmusch - he has more accessible films, but for fans of the director, it’s exactly what you’d imagine of a Jarmusch horror. The sorrow is intercut with some grizzly moments and a downright frightening ending.
