2. The Hunger (1983)

A cult classic for goths everywhere, Tony Scott's erotic thriller is a loose adaptation of the novel of the same name by Whitley Strieber. It centres around the relationship between a doctor who specialises in ageing and sleep, and a vampire couple. A sensational cast includes the likes of David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and - in a very brief appearance - Willem Dafoe.

Upon its original release, much criticism was focused on the story, or lack of it. Scott opted to lean heavily in the direction of provocative violence and aesthetics, just occasionally forgetting what the point of it all is supposed to be and sacrificing substance in the process. The cast however are all exceptional, and while it is certainly a case of style over substance, there is little reason now why that can't be enjoyed at least by some.

Contemporary evaluations comment on the film's sleekness and the beautiful manner in which many of the scenes are filmed, a much fairer view of The Hunger that recognises how it has went on to become a decadent classic. Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller has cited The Hunger as one of the primarily influences on his hit TV series.
