10 Best Medieval War Movies

8. Army Of Darkness (1992)

Outlaw King Chris Pine
Universal

This cult classic may not be what immediately springs to mind when you think about medieval war films. However, it does take place during this era and revolves around a war, so it does technically still qualify for this list. But instead of focusing on a real-life battle or historical figure, it sees the smart-mouthed Ash (Bruce Campbell) fight against an army of undead.

Transported back in time following the events of Evil Dead 2, director and co-writer Sam Raimi wastes no time in jumping straight into the action. For Ash to return back to his own time, he’s tasked with finding the Necronomicon and reciting a specific phrase.

However, Ash, being the lovable idiot that he is, forgets the phrase and consequently releases the aforementioned undead army.

Watching Ash lead his medieval mates against a skeleton army is just as outrageous as it sounds, and it’s all the better for it. Viewers will have to wait until the climax to see the actual war part of this film, but everything else this film has to offer makes the wait more than worth your time.
