4. The Ancient Ones Emerge - The Cabin In The Woods

The Cabin in the Woods plays its cards close to its chest for the most part, finally revealing in the third act that the horror movie-esque rituals talking place throughout the film are at the behest of the Organisation's mysterious figurehead known as The Director (Sigourney Weaver).

After a beat, however, the Director reveals that nothing is quite as it seems, and the rituals are actually undertaken in order to save the world from total destruction.

These rituals are effectively sacrifices to appease the Ancient Ones, a group of evil deities living underneath the Earth who only agree to remain underground if the annual rituals are completed.

Ultimately the two surviving members of the ritual, Marty (Fran Kranz) and Dana (Kristen Connolly), refuse to lay down their lives in order to save the world.

In the closing moments of the film we see one of the Ancient Ones' giant, monstrous hands bursting through the Earth, destroying the facility and presumably the world.

Talk about a neat way to subvert played-out Evil Organisation tropes.
