10 Best Moments In Kong: Skull Island

4. That Accidentally Awesome Chicago Cubs Joke

When the explorers and soldiers first come across Hank Marlow, one of the first things he mentions is being a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs baseball team.

Having been stranded on Skull Island for three decades since crashing there during World War II, he has no idea of what's been happening in the outside world, and naturally one of his first questions is whether or not the Cubs have managed to win the World Series yet.

It's hilarious because, at the time of both the movie's setting (1973) and the time it was being shot, the Cubs hadn't won a World Series since 1908.

However, shortly after Kong reshoots wrapped up, the Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years, making Marlow's line of inquiry all that much more hilarious and fortuitous.

John C. Reilly said of the lucky timing, "When we were making this, of course, we had no idea of what was going to happen. The season was just beginning. The Cubs were doing well, but it was anybody’s guess the way it was going to go. But we knew we would have a topical joke — about the Cubs — no matter what happened."
