10 Best Movie Characters That Never Say A Word

1. Dumbo - Dumbo

Valhalla Rising Mads Mikkelsen
Disney

It's extremely uncommon for Disney protagonists to be silent, but as proven way back in 1941, the results can be truly magical.

Is there a wordless movie character more loveable or iconic than Dumbo?

The big-eared, doe-eyed baby elephant of course has a built-in excuse for not talking - again, he's a baby - yet he's still animated to be so incredibly expressive, while the narrative lifting is done instead by the film's peripheral characters, namely Timothy Q. Mouse (Edward Brophy).

That Dumbo remains one of Disney's most beloved characters is a testament to how effective a wordless character can be, and for that reason the 2019 Tim Burton remake sensibly opted to keep him mute.

When you've got eyes that wide and full of emotion, who even needs a mouth?
