4. True Romance

True Romance's Clarence Worley, one of Quentin Tarantino's first iconic characters, endures a lot on his journey to California. He's killed a man, engaged in a relationship with a prostitute, and made off with a briefcase of drugs he plans to unload on a Hollywood producer. Clarence technically isn't talking to himself when he peers into the bathroom mirror. He's actually conversing with what appears to be his subconscious ego, manifested by Elvis in a shiny gold shirt. Clarence's incarnation of Elvis gives emotional support and encouragement to Clarence, who is one of his biggest fans. Played by Val Kilmer, the barely seen version of the king acts as a surrogate for Clarence as he builds up his self confidence as he faces gunfire, the mob and the police.
