10 Best Movie Sequels (Not Directed By The Original Filmmaker)

8. The Color Of Money

Upon a first watch, some may not even be aware that 1986's The Color of Money is even a sequel. The film wasn't particularly marketed as a sequel, didn't make any mention in its title of being a follow-up, and the picture was released a whole 25 years after its predecessor.

The Color of Money, though, is indeed a sequel to 1961's The Hustler - itself based on Walter Tevis' 1959 novel of the same name.

With Paul Newman picking up his Eddie Falson role from that '61 picture, this time out he's the pool shark mentor rather than the aspiring youngster. It's Tom Cruise in The Color of Money who's the cocksure, hungry pool player trying to make himself some big money, while Newman devours scenery as Cruise hustles.

Newman may have returned for The Color of Money, but The Hustler's director did not. That first film's director was Robert Rossen, who crafted a movie that wowed many. For the long-gestating sequel, though, it was the iconic Martin Scorsese who was on directing duties.

The Color of Money may not be Scorsese's outright best film, but that's kinda tough when you're talking about a person who's also directed the likes of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Departed, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
