8. Sound City

Sound City Dave Grohl proves another facet of his enormous talents by directing this reverent, hugely entertaining music documentary that was a critical smash at Sundance and has continued to be a hit on the VOD circuit. This is the Foo Fighters frontman's love letter to the California-based recording studio that helped nurture talents such as Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Barry Manilow, Metallica, and hundreds of other iconic bands, one that will be of considerable interest to rock music enthusiasts. Grohl convincingly conveys the power of the place, not just of the bands that played there, but the technicians who made it happen, and how the relaxed, artistic atmosphere of the place allowed so many great records to get made, and also so many life-long friendships to flourish. Dripping with charm and providing some thoughtful insights into the creative process, Grohl crafts a film that is surprisingly free of his own self-involvement but instead simply a tribute to a vital musical mainstay.
