6. The Blair Witch Project

As a found footage horror film, the main cast have to die for there to be footage to be, well, found. The Blair Witch Project is no different, subjecting three terrified campers to a series of events that imply something terrible is in the woods with them. We watch as the film wipes out the unknown cast via an unseen force, handily causing their camcorder to be left behind for us lucky souls to witness their demise.

Of course, viewers in 1999 weren't blessed with the wealth of experience and filmmaking knowledge that we have gathered over the past 20 years, and the abrupt deaths of students Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard were a shock to say the least. Found footage style hadn't been established, meaning audiences were ready to believe these tapes were created from a true story. From this, the legend of the Blair Witch has lingered, carving a place for itself in cinematic history for being the pioneer of its style and scaring audiences away from the woods for generations.

The ambiguity of reality and fiction is what works to The Blair Witch Project's favour - especially in the world of film. We would never expect to see a real person's death played out on screen for our entertainment, yet that's exactly what the video makes out to happen. It's shocking, unnerving, and a little too close for comfort.
