5. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Rocky Sylvester Stallone
Orion Pictures

As rival con-artists who go to insane lengths to one-up each other, Steve Martin and Michael Caine might seem like a mismatched comedic duo on the surface, but the hilarious Dirty Rotten Scoundrels proved that odd couples can work beautifully when paired with a killer concept.

The two leads are fantastic here, and their chemistry really ups the whole thing, with Caine's dry wit and Martin's exuberant physicality bringing two completely different styles into play, which click together perfectly.

Released in 1988, the movie still holds up surprisingly well to this day, thanks to its universally-enjoyable joke setups and payoffs. Where a lot of today's comedy movies rely on pop-culture references or crude gags to generate laughs, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels produces gold out of something as simple as Caine repeatedly whacking Martin across the legs. The comedy here is very accessible, a factor that gives the movie a timeless edge that will likely continue for the next few decades.

Even if you're not laughing hysterically, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will at least put a smile on your face. It's very, very difficult to not enjoy.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
