10 Best Musical Numbers In Film
9. Greased Lightning - Grease
There is a question that modern moviegoers often ask themselves. This question is: How did John Travolta become such a big movie star? While many have tried to answer this question in more eloquent terms, the simplest way would be to just roll this clip.
Plenty of critics have gone on record saying that Grease has some really terrible messages at its core (like 'completely change your personality to appease the boy you like'), so perhaps it's telling that the best number in this film is the fluff number that has almost nothing to do with the actual plot. It's a stagey, hokey, and ludicrous number about the fantasy of fixing up an old car. There's no subtext to it whatsoever, but it sure is fun to watch.
The number itself feels like a lost pop song from the 1970s (it peaked at #47 on the US charts, but managed to get to #11 in the UK), and this is an almost perfect choice, since Travolta's performance is deliberately Elvis Presley-esque.
The camera and cutting perfectly transforms the scene into a 1970s male fantasy of automobile mastery, coming back into reality with one of the most perfectly timed jump-cuts ever put to film.
