9. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Maybe the only musical that can be said to have single-handedly revolutionized the film industry, The Wizard of Oz has stood the test of time, and is still considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. Not bad for a 74 year old movie. Possibly the most memorable, and certainly the cleverest part of the movie, is how it begins in a sepia tone while in Kansas. But as soon as Dorothy and Toto are transported to Oz, everything is in a stunning technicolor haze. Many of the quotes from the movie are also part of everyday lingo now, too. When the American Film Institute was compiling a list of the 100 greatest quotes from movie history, three from the Wizard of Oz were included (the only film with more? Casablanca). Finally, there's the songs in it. We all know them. We can probably all sing them, too. I'll refrain from doing it now though so you can avoid having them stuck in your head all day (although, as good as the soundtrack can be, it's way better to watch while listening to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon.
Way better.)
