10 Best Naval War Films You Need To See

4. Black Sea

Master and Commander
Universal International Pictures

Onto another modern submarine flick, 2014's Black Sea was directed by Kevin Macdonald and follows a sea captain and his men. Their task? To raid a sunken German U-boat loaded with gold reserves off the coast of Georgia.

Teaming up with both English and Russian sailors, the crew sets sail in a foxtrot-class submarine to uncover the wreckage. However, tensions over who gets their share of the gold results in catastrophic damage, leaving the men trapped in a race to escape their crumbling craft. The geopolitical struggles over the setting find themselves seeping into the submarine itself.

With Jude Law's strong acting chops at its centre, Black Sea is an often incredibly stressful tale of two opposing sides locked in a bitter struggle to claim their fortune. The characters are forced to make some very difficult decisions from which heading to lead the vessel on to choosing who will live and die in the attempts at salvage.

It may have fairly loose connections to naval combat, but Black Sea is a gritty and unrelenting flick whose narrow and claustrophobic setting only enhances the dramatic tension between the characters. The conflict feels especially personal in this one and as the situation worsens, the searing danger continues to grow.
