5. Amélie

The film student's ultimate Valentine's Day date movie (or anybody who likes great cinema, honestly). Amélie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and released in 2001, follows the eponymous character played by Audrey Tautou, a shy waitress who attempts to change the lives of those around her for the better.

The movie is airy and whimsical while being frequently sweet and funny. It contains a central mystery that ends in romance, so it's the perfect thing to build a bit of amorous tension or intrigue. With Amélie it's possible to appear artsy and cultured while getting to enjoy a legitimately charming film. You really can't go wrong.

And isn't French supposed to be the language of love? Who can listen to that many French people and NOT want to get frisky?
