7. National Treasure (2004) & National Treasure: Book Of Secrets (2007)
Admittedly, this might be cheating on this entry, but the two National Treasure movies are on a very even keel. Both are top notch family fun, the sort of films that you could take children to see on a Sunday afternoon, but that you can enjoy almost as much as them. Take one part Indiana Jones and mix it with one part The Da Vinci Code, add in some light-hearted humour and a sprinkling of Nicolas Cage wackiness and you get a huge helping of cinematic fun. Sadly, they were met (mostly) with critical hostility upon their releases and it's hard to understand why. The older cast members bring the requisite gravitas to proceedings, with the likes of Christopher Plummer, Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel and Helen Mirren appearing across the two films. Justin Bartha (the guy from The Hangover movies who kept getting left out of the fun) provides decent comic relief, and Cage has pretty good chemistry with Diane Kruger. There's also Sean Bean and Ed Harris, two very reliable hands who perform admirably on villain duties. Couple this cast with scripts that have a wonderful zip to them and an infectious energy for discovery and interest in historical events and we reckon you end up with an enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
