David O. Russell's star-studded comedy drama take on the FBI Abscam sting of the late-1970s and early-80s may feel a little bit Scorsese-lite, but fortunately Russell also had the good sense to borrow some of Marty's skill with a mixtape to fix the movie at just the right point in time.
"I love reclaiming things that aren't considered cool," was how Russell described his approach to picking up some of the cheesier end of 70s soft rock in a soundtrack that gives an airing to Steely Dan, America and ELO, all of which fit neatly in the era of big hair and big collars that the movie evokes.
The director specifically selected songs to fit each character and gave his actors period-appropriate record players and vinyl records of songs that he thought their characters would love.
If nothing else, American Hustle and its soundtrack are worth it even if only for the montage of Jennifer Lawrence's neglected wife's increasingly aggressive domestic cleaning routine, performed while singing along to Live And Let Die, a better use of the bombastic Wings track than in the actual Bond movie for which it was written.
