10 Best Nostalgic Mixtape Movie Soundtracks
2. Goodfellas
Choice cuts: The Crystals - "Then He Kissed Me", The Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter", Derek And The Dominos - "Layla"
For many Scorsese's masterpiece, the grandly ambitious Goodfellas spans a period from 1955 to 1980 and gives full scope to the man often considered the greatest living film director to show off not just his full directorial bag of tricks but to chart the passage of time with a soundtrack that expertly cherry picks from over three decades of classic music.
From kicking things off with the smooth big band crooning of Tony Bennett's Rags To Riches to going out with the snarl of Sid Viscious's My Way cover, the Goodfellas soundtrack not only perfectly encapsulates the time and mood of every era of the movie, but does so while providing a brash commentary on the action.
Many of the musical cues were written into the script from the start and, while shooting, dialogue-free scenes were often performed to playback of songs due to feature in the soundtrack. Anything from the dreamy teen romanticism of Phil Spector-produced girl group pop to the swirling Eric Clapton guitar riffs were, therefore, always part of Scorsese's imagination for the finished product.
From jazz to pop to hard rock, the Goodfellas soundtrack jumps through a lot of eras and genres, but never without fitting perfectly with the action on screen and establishing just where we are in time.
