6. The Matrix

There are so many moments in The Matrix that are more iconic than its opening, but that doesn't mean we should forget how brilliant it is.

It's a sequence that throws the audience in at the deep end (almost literally, with that initial shot of the camera pushing inside the computer screen) and doesn't let them out for a good few minutes, as we witness a then-unnamed Trinity beating the hell out of a group of cops, with little explanation for why this is happening.

With the first appearance of Hugo Weaving's smooth-talking Agent Smith, a slice of that kick-ass Matrix action, and that final WTF moment of Trinity getting hit by the truck, it gets the movie off to a thumping start, doing just enough to leave you feeling excited and intrigued for what's to come.

The sequence was finely summarised by one Reddit commenter, who described it like this: "You have no idea what the hell just happened. But you know that it was cool AF." Spot on, random citizen. Spot on.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
