8. Man Of Steel
Say what you will about the DC Universe, but it has a mesmerising visual style, largely thanks to Zack Snyder and that was firmly established in 2010's Man of Steel. The movie opens with Russel Crowe's Jor-El on the planet Krypton, and we get a lengthy opening scene of him trying to save Krypton before sending his son off in a rocket, just before it explodes.
Crowe is a great actor and he made for a great Jor-El, thus giving the scenes some heft and importance. The visual effects captured Krypton in all its splendour and glory, before sharply contrasting that with the imploding core and death.
It's a hauntingly beautiful scene, especially in the way Snyder opted to frame the explosions and Lara praying for her son's safety, with just an orchestral score playing.
The destruction of Krypton has never been as beautifully realised as it was in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, and it really established the dramatic tone of the movie.
