1. Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
Great film, great director, great performances, and what a title! Before The Devil is hands down the most intense and unnerving performance in Hawke's career, surrounded by equally masterful turns by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, and Albert Finney. This was Sidney Lumet's final film, and it was proof he never lost a step in his old age. Hawke plays hank, brother to Andy, a drug-addicted banker who has a plan to rob his family's jewelry store to pay off his problems. Of course, things go horribly wrong. Hank is maybe the dumber brother here, but he is carries the humanity of the film when nobody else would bother. His nervousness juxtaposes the smooth snake-like determination of Hoffman's Andy, and makes it one of the most compelling family dramas/thrillers in the last decade.
