9. Great Expectations
I suppose a theme of this list may be films that were overlooked or under-appreciated in the end. Great Expectations is yet another one of Hawke's better performance in a forgotten picture. The modern adaptation of the classic Dickens novel is a rich, textured film anchored by Hawke's performance as Finn (not Pip), the naive young man who cannot shake the love he carries for Estella (Gwyneth Paltrow), a woman who will never return the favor. One of Hawke's greatest strengths as an actor is his ability to convey a deep-seated yearning and unbridled passion. As Finn, he channels these emotions quite well. The film, directed by then unknown Alfonso Cuaron - who would go on to direct a little masterpiece called Children of Men - accentuates the atmosphere of the film and allows both Paltrow and Hawke to shine in their roles.
