With Father’s Day right around the corner, it’s time to raise a glass and make a special toast to our cinematic parents; those guys have been there through every heartbreak, every setback and every major life decision.

Typically enlightening, occasionally unfathomable and frequently prone to raise a smile, our favourite film father figures have been imparting their reel-life wisdom ever since the first director yelled “action!”

Sure, they may have sent a substitute to chant your name at the baseball game and arrive in the knick of time with a perfectly-wrapped present each birthday, but our on-screen dads have given us an intangible bonus…

Advice; it really is the gift that keeps on giving.

10. Captain Teague (Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End)

On self-acceptance:

“It's not just about living forever, Jackie. The trick is living with yourself forever.”

Yo ho, yo ho, it's a pirate's life for Edward Teague and Jack Sparrow, two buccaneers sailing the open seas while at the same time making waves in their father-son relationship.

Teague is not your typical father figure, noted for having a fearsome temper; he uses his favourite flintlock pistol to shoot anyone who disrespects or violates the Pirate’s Code.

From time to time, even Jack shivers (his timbers) in his father’s presence, but mostly he respects him for the encouraging advice he shares for his ambitions.

Forget the curse of the black pearl; we’re more interested in Captain Teague’s pearls of wisdom.
