10. For The Birds
Plays Before: Monsters Inc.
Cuteness Level (on a scale from Sid Phillips in Toy Story to Bonnie in Toy Story 3): A seagull from Finding Nemo (aka even the annoying birds are cute) A story of a lanky big blue bird that doesn't fit in with the small and short other birds on a telephone wire, For The Birds is an entertaining short. One of the two movies on the list to win the Academy Award, it is emblematic of the extreme slapstick that Pixar has perfected. The big bird's weight pulls down the wire while the smaller birds try to push him off, and when they finally do get the big bird off the wire, the elasticity throws the smaller birds off and into the air. The animation is dense but not showy, the effect of a cloud shading a part of a field is seen in an establishing shot, but it is more interested in the story than showing off their considerable animation talents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dq2dJcZBJA Directed by Ralph Eggleston, the story is ultimately about the pitfalls of being exclusionary, and while it isn't the most revolutionary idea, For The Birds is still a nice and satisfying short.
