2. You Won’t Be Alone

Causeway Films

Directed by Goran Stolevski, You Won’t Be Alone is set in Macedonia in the 19th century and follows a girl named Nevena, who was initially raised in a cave before being taken in by a hideous witch at the age of 16. She also gets turned into a witch by her new guardian, like some sort of wiccan graduate scheme.

The story flits between Nevena (Sara Klimoska) co-habiting with the evil spellcaster, learning to live above ground amongst the forest creatures, and interacting with a local group of humans. There’s some depth here, as the young woman must choose the life she wants to live with the constant threat of being pulled back into the world of dark magic.

There’s also plenty of blood and guts too, quite literally in some places. Lot of entrails in this film.

You Won’t Be Alone is as much a well-plotted family drama as it is a supernatural horror; perfect for viewers who like a story to go along with their viscera.
