People were excited for this movie from the moment they saw those unnerving previews, and we finally got our hands on it in December of 2021. This Icelandic feature is drenched in atmosphere, set against a foggy rural backdrop where our farmer protagonists find themselves in a totally unexpected situation.
One of their sheep births a human-sheep hybrid, and after taking it in and beginning to raise it as their child they find that things aren’t going to be simple. In fairness, no part of that previous sentence should lead you to thinking the situation would be simple.
It’s another slow-burner, one that you have to completely sink into to get the most out of. Both human interpersonal dramas and ones of the more supernatural kind unfold, giving audiences the best of both worlds.
In the English-speaking sphere we’re usually so quick to dismiss anything in another language, but Lamb is not to be sniffed at. As Bong Joon-Ho famously said at the Oscars, “once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films."
