10 Best Richard Matheson Film & TV Adaptations

8. Somewhere In Time (1980) - Film

somewhere-in-time This science fiction/romance story is a bit of a departure from Matheson's usual literary elements. Matheson wrote the screenplay which was based on his 1975 novel, Bid Time Return. The film stars Christopher Reeve (his third feature film role) as Richard Collier, a playwright who is given a pocket watch from a strange old woman who dies soon after. Years later he is staying at a hotel where he sees a picture of a woman from the early 20th century. Richard learns that the woman in the portrait (played by Jane Seymour) was the same woman that had given him the watch years earlier. After investigating the identity of the woman he finds a book on time travel in her home and becomes obsessed with the idea of traveling back in time to meet this mysterious woman with whom he has fallen in love with. The film did not receive much publicity because of its low budget and in turn did not do well at the box office. However it received some critical praise and won several awards which includes Best Costume, Music, and Fantasy Film at the Saturn Awards. The movie started a cult following in subsequent years and many fans attend an annual Somewhere In Time convention that takes place at The Grand Hotel, where the film was shot.
