10 Best Roger Deakins Movies

8. Rango

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Paramount Pictures

It takes something special for a non-Disney/Pixar production to win Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, but with a little help from Deakins, that's exactly what Rango did.

The adventures of a Johnny Depp sounding chameleon in the Old West, is unusual to say the least but nevertheless provides all the humor, heartwarming messages and visual splendor that is required in the very best family movies.

Deakins, no stranger to animation having also consulted on the first two How To Train Your Dragon movies, works wonders with Rango, creating both a homage and spoof to the Western genre that, in tandem with oddball characters and a quirky animation style, proves to be a feast for the eyes.

The climatic battle between Rango and Rattlesnake Jake (Bill Nighy) encompasses all the great visuals this movie has to offer.
