6. District 9 In the 2009 South African film District 9, Neill Blomkamp recounts a fictionalized version of Johannesburg in which an alien spaceship has parked over the city. The extraterrestrials, called prawns, are stranded on earth and are delegated to living in prawn-communes, reminiscent of the not-distant issue of apartheid that had plagued the region. As the protagonist Wikus is within the alien colony, he is accidentally sprayed by a metallic canister filled with black goo. Though initially he only feels ill, Wikus gradually undergoes a transformation. He ends up fleeing from the military he once worked alongside, as his life goals undergo a dramatic revolution.
