The promotions for M3GAN were so aggressive and imaginative, the cyber thriller was shaping up to be a huge hit, regardless of its quality.

Fortunately, M3GAN proved to be one of the smartest (and funniest) slashers in recent years. The story revolves around an orphan called Cady (Violet McGraw) who's reluctantly adopted by her aunt, a robotics engineer called Gemma (Allison Williams). Although things seem promising when Gemma urges Cady to befriend her android prototype, things take a nasty turn very quickly.

What makes M3GAN work is how it balances its themes perfectly, serving as a tongue-in-cheek satire that explores technology addiction in a way that's relevant without feeling forced. Watching Cady interact with the titular villain to the point where she can't function without her will resonate with anyone who has trouble tearing themselves away from their devices.

Also, the film isn't afraid of making likeable characters heavily flawed. Gemma comes across as fittingly robotic while Cady is sometimes depicted as ungrateful and brattish. However, depicting the leads this way makes them surprisingly sympathetic, since their behaviour is understandable and somewhat justified.

Also, there are some genuine laugh-out-loud moments which juxtaposes brilliantly with the brutal gore (at least in the X-rated version).

And with a sequel and a spin-off already in the works, M3GAN looks like the beginning of a solid and lucrative franchise.
