10 Best Sci-Fi Movie Cliffhangers

7. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

TERMINATOR 3
Lucasfilm

It’s hard to imagine now, but, in 2015, JJ Abrams’ revival to the then-tired Star Wars franchise was met with a huge buzz.

Released 30 years after the original trilogy ended with Return of the Jedi in 1983, the film saw a celebration of the franchise’s history, while introducing some new energy to the mix.

It saw the return of some classic, older characters (including Han, Leia and C-3PO), while establishing a load of new characters (including Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren). However, one important classic character was oddly missing from the majority of the film: Mark Hamill’s very own, Luke Skywalker.

Then, the film ends in dramatic fashion as Rey tracks down Luke, and presents him with the notion of training her.

This ending was done as tribute to the saga’s love for cliffhangers, having done so very famously in Empire Strikes Back. And it worked well, as we all became desperate to see what happened next. Even, if it was just to see Mark Hamill speak.
