Sometimes a movie comes along with a premise so crazy that it's hard to believe it ever got made. Colossal, a low-budget sci-fi starring Anne Hathaway, is one of those movies. Why, you wonder? Well, because its plot focuses on a depressed woman who comes to realise that she is somehow linked telephonically to a giant, Godzilla-like monster wreaking havoc on Seoul, South Korea.

So, yes, Colossal wins all the prizes for "original concept," but thankfully it also has the wit and energy to live up to such a unique premise, marking it out as one of the best sci-fi films of last year. Aside from being a sci-fi, though, Colossal embraces multiple genres at once, including comedy, romance, drama, and even satire.

Colossal has the makings of a film that is sure to infuriate those who can't buy into the ideas that writer/director Nacho Vigalondo is trying to explore (especially since he's playing a drinking problem for laughs). That said, open-minded viewers will be rewarded by what is a fascinating exploration of depression.

Hathaway claimed she'd reached a career crossroad when she stumbled upon the script for Colossal and realised it was the sort of movie she wanted to make. We're glad she did - as Gloria, she delivers one of her finest performances.
