10 Best Self Aware Horror Movies

6. The Cabin In The Woods

Little Monsters Lupita Nyong'o
Lionsgate

By now everyone has heard of The Cabin in the Woods and is at least vaguely aware of what it’s about, even if you’ve only seen the elevator scene. But then again, what scene possibly sums the film up in a better way?

A group of friends take a trip to a woodland cabin, completely unaware that their experiences are being controlled by a group of scientists. Seemingly random items in the basement are connected to different monsters that may attack the group, and after selecting an old diary and reading from it, a family of redneck zombies rise up from the ground.

The scientists’ goal is to sacrifice all the friends: each of them representing a horror movie archetype right through from the ‘fool’ and the ‘whore’ to the ‘virgin’. Whilst knowing the tropes will do these characters no good, it’s fun for audiences to be able to spot all the little references and easter-eggs; especially in that famous elevator scene when everyone pauses to take a long look at all the potential monsters the friends could have faced.
