10 Best Spielberg Blockbuster Movies - Ranked

6. Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park Steven Spielberg
Universal

As mentioned previously, Spielberg loves to take action/adventure premises and infuse them with a more horror-film oriented sense of suspense and tension to craft some thrillingly visceral moments. Which is exactly why a film like Jurassic Park was such a natural fit for the director.

While another director may have leaned too heavily on one half of the formula and ruined the whole thing, Spielberg essentially made a big-budget horror blockbuster for the whole family, which is kind of insane. The dinosaurs are seen as beautiful creatures, who Spielberg shoots in a way that is full of wonder and childlike imagination. Only to then purposefully twist that beauty and majesty into something much more sinister when creatures like the T-Rex and Raptors are properly introduced.

It is the combination of this delicate balance and Spielberg's expert level of directing that makes a sequence like the initial T-Rex attack so effective. It builds upon the experiences the film has already given the audience as well as a mounting sense of suspense, forcing us to see the horror through the children's eyes as well.

It is a film full of heart, steller setpieces, and some of the most finely-tuned directing and pacing Spielberg has ever delivered.
