10 Best Sports Movies Of The 21st Century
3. Creed
Released: 2015
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 94%
If Rocky Balboa was a strong hit, then Creed was a definite knockout. It's easily the best movie in the series since the original.
In arguably the best performance of his short career so far, Michael B. Jordan plays the son of Rocky’s former foe-turned-friend Apollo Creed. Looking to step out of his father’s shadow Adonis Creed seeks out Rocky to become his trainer. Initially Rocky refuses, but with Adonis refusing to take no for an answer, it doesn’t take long for the Italian Stallion to put his business commitments to one side and head back into the gym.
Boxer Tony Bellew makes his big screen debut as Adonis’s opponent Ricky Conlan, however it’s the performances of Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone that stand head and shoulders above the rest. If anyone still had any reservations about Stallone’s ‘limited’ acting ability, this Global Globe winning performance (Best Supporting Actor) may well have finally put them to bed.
It’s easy to forget how much of a phenomenon the Rocky series was and it would be a difficult task for Creed to reach those heights. But after a strong box office showing, excellent reviews from critics and a sequel reportedly already in the works, expect to see this series take off.
