With The Dark Tower opening recently in the U.S. (admittedly to a critical drubbing) and the new adaptation of It due to hit screens imminently, it's clear that Hollywood's interest in the works of Stephen King is as strong as ever, having endured for over four decades.

However, it's fair to say that the cinematic treatments of the horror legend's novels have varied wildly in quality over the years, and as such it's never that clear before a new one is released whether or not it's going to honour the vision King has created (though in fairness, not all of his books are exactly masterpieces).

Still, over 40 years and with more than 50 films, by sheer law of maths a good number of the adaptations have turned out to be great movies, even though their degree of faithfulness to King's source material tends to vary wildly.
